What is an HTML5 speed test?

An HTML5 speed test measures your internet connection using only the technology already built into your browser, HTML5 and JavaScript. There is nothing to install: no Flash, no Java applet, no browser plugin and no app. You open the page, tap Start, and it measures your download, upload, latency and jitter.

Why HTML5 replaced Flash and Java

Older speed tests relied on Adobe Flash or Java applets. Both are now deprecated, removed from modern browsers, and were never supported on iPhone or Android. A pure HTML5 test solves all of that:

SpeedOf.Me has been a 100% HTML5 speed test since 2011, one of the first to drop Flash entirely.

Is HTML5 accurate enough?

Yes, and arguably more representative than older tools. SpeedOf.Me downloads and uploads progressively larger real files and reports a single-stream result, which mirrors what one real download or stream actually achieves. Many multi-stream tests open dozens of parallel connections to inflate the headline number; that peak is not what a single file transfer or video sees.
