Those are per person, with headroom. If two people work from the same line, add them up, and add roughly 5 Mbps of download for every video stream playing elsewhere in the house. A plan of 50 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up covers most single remote workers comfortably; the upload figure is the one to check on your plan, because entry-level cable and DSL plans often sell 100 Mbps down with 5 Mbps or less up.

Why upload and stability matter more than download

Streaming a film needs download. Working from home is the other direction: your voice, your camera and your screen go up the line, and every call is a live stream you are sending. A 200 Mbps plan with 5 Mbps of upload will freeze on a group call the moment a cloud backup starts.

Latency is how long a packet takes to get there and back; jitter is how much that time varies. Voice and video tolerate a slow-ish line far better than an unstable one, which is why a call can break up on a connection that downloads at full speed. The test above reports both, and a jitter figure over 30 ms on a wired connection is worth a call to your provider.

Questions people ask

Is 25 Mbps enough to work from home?

For one person doing email, documents and the occasional video call, usually yes, provided the upload is at least 3 Mbps and the line is stable. Add group calls, a second worker or a household that streams while you work, and 50 Mbps down with 10 Mbps up is a safer floor.

Is 100 Mbps good for working from home?

Yes for download; check the upload. Many 100 Mbps plans come with 5 Mbps of upload or less, which is tight for group video and screen sharing. The upload number and a jitter figure under 30 ms matter more for remote work than the download headline.

What internet speed do I need for Zoom or Teams calls?

Roughly 3 Mbps each way for a one-to-one HD call and 3 to 6 Mbps each way for group calls with screen share, with latency under 150 ms and jitter under 30 ms. The vendors publish their own tables; the numbers above include headroom.

Does a VPN slow my connection?

A little on throughput and more on latency, because traffic takes a longer route. Test with the VPN connected and disconnected: if the difference is large, the VPN endpoint or your device is the bottleneck, not the line.

Why is my speed test fast but my calls still drop?

Because calls depend on stability, not on peak speed. High jitter, packet loss or a Wi-Fi link that fluctuates will break a call on a fast line. Look at the latency and jitter numbers, test wired, and test during your working hours.
